This was exactly the same problem I had. It was really bad on mine. Smaller variations in backlight I would not care about, but on my devices it was really irritating in my face. So much that I no longer enjoyed using the A1 and reading books in the dark.

Apart from the big problems I had with the natural backlight, it was a truley awsome device and a great e-reader (that was why I gave it so many chanses to find an acceptable one).
