Parents do not do justice to their children by hiding food with much too powerful flavors.(hypersweets are an other example) No wonder most people as they age can not detect the subtle differences in wines and spices.

I once read a story about a woman who always had salt in her purse. Whatever she ate, she'd sprinkle salt on it, because "it didn't have any taste otherwise"...
Personally, I hardly use sauce on anything, only a cheese sauce on (wikipedia to my rescue!) cauliflower. And on my pasta, naturally. We don't use too many spices either, if the cooking is done correctly, you don't need lots of spices...
And mayonnaise with fries.
