Doing it for 4.23 is probably no issue. I don't think the driver has changed since then except to add new device and firmware support. 3.48 was released to long ago for me to remember.
And for the record, as I am the person who is probably going to do this, if you are not stuck (actually stuck, not just haven't gotten around to it) on one of these versions of calibre, I have absolutely no interest in hearing from you. It is not about you. It is about those who cannot use calibre v5. And to be honest, it's much more likely to make me not do it. Whereas a reasoned post like @RobertJSawyer's is much more likely to work.
