The person who made the program does have "direct first hand knowledge of this information". And they explicitly told you were to look to change the values and what units are used for the values.
What the person who made the program does not know is how each individual user want the program configured. They don't know how
you want the screen to be laid out. The margins that are being talked about are how much space is to be left empty around the text. Different people like different amounts of space. So
you have to set it to what
you want. Looking back at your original post, as you don't like the wasted space, try setting them to zero.
And if you really want to know the size of the screen, the best way to find that out would be to get a ruler and measure your ereader.
