I just recently revived a Kobo Mini (after replacing the battery) and had a similar issue with updating (it never completed via the Kobo Desktop). What I ended up doing was manually downloading the 4.19.14123 firmware for the Glo (why the Glo firmware, I don't know, but it's always worked), then unzipping that file and moving it into .kobo folder on the Mini, and then restarting to manually update. I've since updated to 4.28.18220 because there was a dictionary issue with 4.19 on the Kobo Mini. So, if I had it to do again, I would just start with the 4.28 firmware.
Once this is done, the Mini works fine. WiFi, syncs with your other Kobos, will download your Overdrive loans, etc.
The period in the .kobo directory means "hidden" so you'll have to enable "show hidden files" in Windows to show the folder.
Good luck. I've been using this Mini a lot more than I thought I would.
You can get the latest Glo firmware here...

It looks like they're offering 4.30.xxxx for the Glo now — you can click the Older tab if you would rather try the 4.28 (I know for sure it works. 4.30 probably does also.)
