Bodkin, M McDonnell: Paul beck, the Rule of Thumb Detective; (1898); v1, 2 Nov 2021

A year or two ago, in pursuit of Victorian detectives, I began searching for the Paul Beck stories, which ran in Pearson's Magazine and were of course later published in various collections. The first Beck collection published was this one, but all I could find was a cover, and a contents list. A little later I found a couple of stories from this volume and put them up in "Past Masters" pending finding the rest. Then I found some later volumes: The Capture of Paul Beck, and Young Beck, which I was able to post here. Now thanks to Roy Glashan's Library, where Matthias Kaether and Roy Glashan have posted the individual missing stories with their Pearsons Magazine illustrations, I have been able to complete this volume.

1. The Vanishing Diamonds
2. The Miniature Halter
3. By a Hair's Breadth
4. Murder by Proxy
5. Greased Lightning
6. The Dog and the Doctor
7. Under His Own Hand
8. The Poisoner
9. The Slip Knot
10. The Slump in Silver
11. Cabinet Secrets
12. The Two Kings
