For what it's worth, I got the new paperwhite yesterday, not-signature.
The screen is the most uniform illumination I had on any Kindle, except for the Voyage - they are about on par.
But the text is a bit darker on my new PW than on the Voyage. Overall, this is my new favorite Kindle screen.

The Oasis I had, first gen Oasis, was a disaster. Most uneven screen I have ever had, on any electronic device, period. Just these cones of light/shade across the screen.

Frankly, we have many Kindle lovers in my extended family. We have often compared screens of the same model, same gen - and found huge variation, in tone, uniformity, brightness, everything.

So I wonder, when I read these conversations... it seems to me it really is all just luck of the draw. Variation is huge, quality control is a joke...
