I appreciate the suggestion, but there isn't really a lot of metal; it's not in a firebox in a real fireplace. I don't have an outlet farther away on that wall, and even if I did, the insert isn't supposed to be used with a normal extension cord. And the Wemo plug worked in the past, albeit with occasional problems.
When I was fooling with it yesterday, I did try removing the smart plug to a different outlet in another room, with nothing plugged into it, just to see if I could set it up, but it's still impossible.
