Australia does have a Goods and Services Tax, does it not? A quick google says that it's at 10%, which accounts for at least some of the difference you mention.
The "smaller markets" explanation was also very reasonable. To test this, I checked the price Kobo is charging in an even smaller market, New Zealand, and found that the equivalent price in AUD would be $468 - higher still, even factoring in their higher rate of GST. Since you're so outraged by the price charged in Australia that you're unable to reply civilly to someone attempting to be helpful, it's a good thing you're not in New Zealand, or your rage might have been even worse.
