Update: It worked. \o/
What I did: I used a new SD card with 32 GB (didn't have a smaller one), because the image was too big for the original 2 GB card. (I would like to try to expand the partition, but for now I'm glad it worked and am satisfied with the 1.3 GB free space which is apparently part of the image.)
I flashed the SD card with the image. The setup via Kobo Desktop again didn't work right away, but after loading the most recent firmware (3.19.5761-s from 2015), everything worked out fine. I was a little freaked out when it took a while to update and the screen froze in the process, but sometimes one just needs to be patient.

Thanks again for your help! I couldn't have done it without you.
