I know that 12 is not a prime number, but if you take the individual digits of the date (1 and 2) and add them together you get a prime number (3). It's just like the 14th will also be an additive prime number (1 + 4 = 5).

It's much like when you multiply by 9 you can check to see if you made a mistake. The digits of result of multiplying a single digit number by 9 will always add up to 9 (2 * 9 = 18, 1 + 8 = 9).

Having fun with numbers win (and got good instruction from watching Multiplication Rock as a kid).
