It is done in Preferences: Tweaks
Keyword:
Library Order (what Calibre defaults to)
Once done and Calibre has been restarted,You need to make Calibre recompute the sorts:
In the Tag Browser: Right click Authors: Manage: (the button needed is at the bottom)
For Title: Select all Books: Tap "E" (bulk metadata edit): Tick the Title recalculate box
Call me stuck in my ways, but why would you look (in a list) for an Author by first name? How many John's there would be?
In the rare case you only remembered the first name,
Search: Author:john
