The main difference between a regular Kindle e-book and a Kindle periodical is how the table of contents is presented. The display for a periodical is much richer, potentially presenting a summary and an image for each article.

When you email a MOBI file it is delivered to Kindle apps and devices marked as a personal document (CDEContentType=PDOC). A periodical purchased from Amazon is instead marked as a newspaper (CDEContentType=NWPR) or magazine (CDEContentType=MAGZ).

A Kindle device displays a periodical properly regardless of the content type, however the Kindle for Android app will not display a periodical as a periodical if the content type indicates that it is a personal document.

One way around this problem is to side load the periodical file from calibre to the Kindle for Android app via USB instead of sending by email.
