I would try just installing the older firmware first. If you have issues, then time for the factory reset.
  1. Kobopatching is not quite the same as NickelMenu but the installation is much the same.
  2. You can use NickelMenu on a patched Kobo. I have not read of any issues with doing so.
  3. You select the patches you want and change the no to yes to enable the patch.
  4. See the above for running a few patches. I use 3 or 4 out of the full patch set.
