I would try just installing the older firmware first. If you have issues, then time for the factory reset.
- Kobopatching is not quite the same as NickelMenu but the installation is much the same.
- You can use NickelMenu on a patched Kobo. I have not read of any issues with doing so.
- You select the patches you want and change the no to yes to enable the patch.
- See the above for running a few patches. I use 3 or 4 out of the full patch set.
