This is not only a problem with the Fantasy genre, but also with technical books that have many references to texts whose authors may appear only a few times.

From Kovid's answer to you I can see that I could create a custom dictionary of those names. So, I pose a question to Kovid...could a book be linked to a particular custom dictionary so that it would automatically be opened (made active) when that book is being edited? Because, for the books that I'm editing the set of authors can be quite lengthy for each book but the likelihood of intersecting sets is vanishingly small.
