Forma: touch screen unresponsive

Suddenly my Kobo Forma won't respond to any touch screen actions anymore. I woke it up after a few days of inactivity, battery at 67%, the sync button started churning and it didn't respond. I thought it was because the syncing was hogging resources or something like that, like on Windows. I made it sleep, woke it, same thing. I restarted it, same thing.

Then I waited until the sync button wasn't churning anymore. But now it still won't respond. What it looks like is as though all touch screen functionality has been lost. I can switch it on or off with the button, and I have a hunch that if I'd left it with a book open instead of at the home screen the last time it still worked, the forward/backword buttons might still work. If I connect it to a computer I do get the question 'connect or just charge'. I just can't tap any of the answers.

Is this a known failure of the device after a while or in certain circumstances? Is there a known remedy?
