I am using Momax BR-04 (I can only find the link for BR-03). It's around USD$14 but I got this for USD$5. This is the demo video. This works really well and it is small.

The idea is very simple. You just need a bluetooth device that can send volume up/down signal. I guess you can try Bluetooth audio button for cars and use it on your e-reader.
