Which version of Windows are you using? 4.23 does have a 64-bit version which should be installed if it's not and then maybe your large conversions may work.

If you are running Windows 7, the recommended suggestion is to upgrade to Windows 10 unless Windows 10 won't work on your hardware. If not, then upgrade to the current version of Calibre 5.
