I tried both suggestions. I used Word to create a new document. Still the conversion error.

I tried converting to epub, and then converting epub to pdb. Error.

I tried updating Calibre. Error.

I only get the error if I select the ereader/pdb, not if I select doc/pdb.

I think I'll give up and just use the Mobi format. I have a Palm Mobi reader on my T|X so it'll do.
