I bought a Kobo and stopped using the Kindle to proof read & annotate books. Amazon's Kindle is more locked down.
The Kobo models work best with Calibre for series, collections, import highlights/annotations/bookmarks. Davidfor's great Kobo Utilities.

However I only copy/paste the per book annotations to text files opened beside the wordprocessor file that was used to create the ebook.

Get a Kobo Libra if collections, series and annotations managed on the PC (Mac, Windows or Linux) by Calibre is important.

My Wife and I still buy Amazon ebooks for our Kindles but read them on the Kobo Libra.
