In that image, the background is transparent. As an experiment, I set the background colour for the style of the paragraph to green. When I viewed the page, the background of the image is green.
Putting that and an unchanged version on my Glo and trying both Invert Screen and Dark Mode, it worked about how I expected. The background colour was what was inverted in each case. Then the image with a transparent background was inverted. The transparent parts of the image were not inverted and remained transparent. In Dark Mode, the text disappeared because the image is not inverted, but, the background is. Which means it was black on black. The rest of the strangeness (only seeing the question mark and the x) are due to the colours chosen and how they are grey-scaled and then combined with the two modes.
And honestly, this sort of thing demonstrates to me why Kobo has been reluctant to do this. Getting it right is a nightmare. And then explaining why it is right is another nightmare.
