Another possibility, though it does feel a bit far-fetched to me:
Could accidentally unplugging a device* while sending metadata to it break the
Calibre database? I checked my Kobo's db and it was fine so I didn't think much of it.
*I've been having a few
connectivity issues, and I had a brain-fart and didn't realize it
had connected. I'm an idiot sometimes.
