@jangell2: You should be able to sideload the update manually, regardless of the OTA blocking mechanism. (i.e., just copy the .bin at the USB root and eject, it'll get picked up automatically).

(Fair warning: I haven't updated a Kindle in years, I may be misremembering things ;p).
