Hi everyone - thanks for the kind words - indeed also an offer of a donation! There have been a number of suggestions that I should get the warranty now and swap it out - unfortunately, I'd feel bad about doing this, pesky morals! I've decided I can live with it for the time being - it's kind of fun guessing the missing word in the top right corner, and if the book is suitably engrossing, I find I stop noticing the damage after a while. I guess I've done the electronic equivalent of dropping a paperback in the bath.
I'm going to bank the $200 and use it as guilt-free Kindle 3 money, when it appears.
Of course, should an Amazon rep happen to read this post, and feel the need to stop me saying to all "It's an awesome product, but this is what happens if you drop it...."
