I only download to my desktop, from lending libraries and Gutenberg.
From there I sync to my devices using my own AdbSync.exe (in sig).

OPDS is interesting. XML based catalog for documents. Works well for ebooks. Calibre-web will produce one for you using calibre - although I don't know if it talks to calibre, or just calibre's database. I'll look into adbsync - a quick googling shows that it's probably cross-platform.
