Hitting is only one way to break a glass substrate. Twisting and bending forces, or temperature extremes, can do it.

I'm not sure why you'd change to a Kindle as a result? I don't _think_ they have a flexible-substrate device yet (please correct me if I'm wrong), while Kobo does - the Forma.
