Swipe up from bottom: depending on which direction you jumped from, there is an arrow in lower right or left corner that will navigate to the previous location. If you make multiple jumps, it has ‘breadcrumbs’ for the various locations, and you can go all the way back to where you started. I think this is unchanged from previous functionality.
However, the breadcrumbs go away if you start to go back and then reverse direction without going all the way back: then you can only jump between the two locations just visited. I regard this as a bug in an otherwise useful feature (and maybe it works the same with the Kindle apps? But I really don’t jump around that much).
The Back button as it was was a bit overloaded: it could go somewhere else in the book, or it could take you back to Home or Library, and from there, to some other book: there was no way of knowing what it was going to do just by looking at it. Now the Back button is labeled to let you know where you are going, and there is also an X in upper right corner if you just want to Close/Exit (instead of the Home icon).
I see they’ve fiddled some more with the Aa panels: same stuff, I think, just rearranged.
Initially I was put off by the reduction from 7 to 5 titles per page (still 6 in Cover view). But I am warming up to it: it is nice that you can get right back to the last book you were reading from anywhere, no matter where you are, or what books might have downloaded between reading sessions. (What do Special Offers Kindles look like? Where do they put the ads?) I have been trying to avoid switching books too often, and this will help with the focus.
I can still ignore Home Screen: if I start from Library, If you start on Home, you go back there when you close the book, and if you start from Library you go back to Library. Heck, now I CAN get to Home Screen if I have an inkling to do so, whereas before it was like 5 taps to turn it on to see what it looked like.
And now Go To is an icon: more available space for any given language.
Goodreads is still there, but you cannot get to the GR pages when reading a book (you can of course still Share). In Home/Library, it’s on the 3 dot menu. Only the toolbar is changed.
Amazingly, they have removed Kindle Store icon/item from all of the menus/toolbars. If you want to go there, you have to go to Home/Library and even then it is just a tiny, unlabeled shopping cart icon. Very low key by comparison.
There is an issue with the Read filter: when I select ALL, turning on the filter displays zero books (should be 600+).
Overall, I think it is a nice redesign, and I’m ready to put it on my other Paperwhite.
Now, please add Author Grouping, Amazon. I would also have liked if they could have improved the scrollers in Kindle Store listings, X-Ray, Notes, etc to add page up/down buttons like they have on Home Screen as an alternative to swipe up/down, which doesn’t always work well.
