While I agree with you and find that dark mode is the superior method, I can see others argument that having the dictionary, annotations, and controls all not be affected can result in a bit of eye shock if the brightness is turned up. That said I’ve never felt it necessary to turn the brightness above 10% and typically have it at around 5% which hardly presents a too bright white when these elements of the UI are triggered.
