Any way to automate Calibre actions?

I'm wondering if there is a way to automate actions in Calibre based on some triggering event.

For example, I would like an action to be carried out automatically whenever a book is added to my library.

For the action part I notice there is a plugin called Action Chains which looks like an interesting way of producing an action workflow, it's just the means of automating the execution of events I'm looking for.

Edit - I see there are a number of events that can be specified in Action Chains, but I don't think they are the ones I need.
