I think it may depend on your definition of "not selected". If I un-select as in post #4 then press 'read book' or 'edit metadata' or 'convert book' it gives me an error that says "No book selected". However the previously-selected book still remains in the Book Details panel.
You can also un-select all books by left-clicking in the empty space below the last book in the list or to the right of the rightmost column. Either of these may be inconvenient depending on your book list layout.
