The mobi format is there because CRengine supported it in the first place. Is not improved in the same way epub/fb2 are.

A tool like Kindle Comic Converter will generate cbzs optimized for your device, so hopefully they will weight less and you'll get fast page turns.

Another way of reducing the size of images would be preprocessing them with Imagemagik and adjust them for the e-ink palette.
