For me, I had gotten my Kindle 1 late last year for $15 (alongside a Kindle 4 for $14, and a brand new case for the K4 for $3) and in my town, there is no Sprint coverage at all! However, two nearby cities have coverage so almost every time I went to those I would bring my Kindle 1. I had to also buy a universal power adapter kit (you know with the tips n stuff) in order to charge the Kindle 1 as official power adapters are EXTREMELY rare.
Kindle 1s are rare because they were only really sold for five and a half hours- when they were restocked in 2008 the Kindle 2 was out and costed less and had more features. Lots of people sold the Kindle 1 (or traded them in if that was possible) and as such most Kindle 1 units aren't owned by their original owners, or they haven't been powered in years.
