That's almost as funny as your last suggestion for why Kobo haven't moved to the latest version of the RMDSK. And, I'm still wondering if you know what version Kobo is using, what the latest version is, and what the changes in it are.
Been a little while since I checked and I don't currently have a Kobo anymore to check but the ePub renderer was essentially broken for Japanese vertical writing books but the same book works fine in Adobe Digital Editions 4+. And has other issues with ePub 3 content. So either Kobo's RMSDK implementation is horrible or it's not using the same level as ADE 4.
