I've removed DRM on Kindle books just to be able to read what I've bought legitimately on different devices, correct scan errors and control my own library. There really doesn't have to be a personal distribution network involved and I personally wouldn't trust one.
It's interesting that Google Books began with the values you've expressed (books should be free, if I read you correctly) as its principle. That didn't last, however.
