I sideload everything. For a couple of reasons. Number one is so I can use the DeDRM plugin for Calibre and strip off the DRM. DRM would not be a problem on my preferred reading device - a Paperwhite. But I also put my current book onto my cellphone so if I'm stuck somewhere without the Paperwhite, I can still read it. I use MoonReader on the cellphone, and that doesn't like Amazon's DRM.
Also, by sideloading, I can leave WiFi off. That saves battery. It also keeps updates from happening until I allow them to happen. And it keeps my "Ad supported Kindle" ad-free. No internet connection, no ads (you do have to wait a little while for any current ads to drain off, but when the device runs out of ads it is then ad-free).
