There should be a 'screensavers' folder inside 'linkss', that's were you should place your images in for the app to process it. I don't think you should touch 'cover_cache', it seems that the app uses it for something else.

I have also been putting the images into /screensavers. I forgot to mention that. I have been trying to replace the default screensaver when I press the power button to turn the screen off, and it will not display a custom image.
I have been using GIMP to save as an 8-bit, grayscale PNG. Is that low enough?
The Kindle is 4-bit, isn't it?
