I wouldn't worry about running out of IP addresses too much... they thought it would happen back in the 90's (and it could have) but new methods of reducing required numbers came up - If we really wanted to, everyone in the world could be on the internet using IPv4. But of course that would require a lot of networking issues many would like to avoid. But it is possible!

As for the transition, I don't think it will be too bad. The main backbone of of the internet is greatly IPv6 compatible now, and compatibility is phasing in all the time. New computers are all IPv6 compatible, and a lot of new consumer equipment (like routers and switches, etc) is too. And as people, corporations, etc transition to IPv6, that will prevent the continuous expanding of IPv4 usage. Crisis averted!
