Kovid ... UPDATE to above.
I tried exporting to my Passport (exfat) again, in a different port. This time Windows told me there was an error with the drive! So I scanned and repaired it and exported again (to my Passport) and this time it completed successfully, with no error messages. I think when I tried it above, I had either or both a faulty USB port as first time, Windows didn't tell me there was an error with the drive. But it makes sense too if my export stopped at the point on my Passport which had an error on it.
So, good to know that a) it will export to exfat and b) it did also export to my laptop NTFS drive c) a good tip if anyone experiences my error above when exporting by usb to an external hard drive, is to try the hard drive in another port first and scan the external hard drives for errors too. Something I maybe should have thought of and done first before asking here! But thanks again for your input. It was your suggestion of non NTFS that made me check the format of the external hard drive .... and as in a different port got the "found errors on drive" message.
