I could as easily have used a Windows or Mac OSX VM as a Linux VM. The advantage to me is that I can snapshot a VM, test whatever I want to test and revert the snapshot if something unpleasant happens. In this case, since I'd been updating my SUSE Tumbleweed VM, it was handy for the test.
