“The Devil’s Diamond Plays the Devil’s Own Games!”
Richard Marsh’s first novel. Catalogued as “a whimsical novel” by the publisher of the first edition, this is a comic-gothic tale of a cursed jewel which brings ruin and death to anyone who owns it. Samuel Hookham inherits the fabulously valuable Devil’s Diamond from his estranged brother, and finds himself in one predicament after another, culminating in an indictment for murder. An entertaining story that blends the mystery of the supernatural with episodes of farcical humour.

Richard Marsh (12 October 1857 – 9 August 1915) was the pseudonym of English author Richard Bernard Heldmann. One of the most popular and prolific authors of the late-Victorian and Edwardian periods, he is best known now for his supernatural thriller novel The Beetle, which for a time outsold Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Marsh produced nearly 80 volumes of fiction and numerous short stories, in genres including horror, crime, romance and humor.
