One time I ran into a situation where an office computer would not power on. When I asked if the computer, monitor, etc. were all plugged into the power bar, I was told yes and a lamp plugged into the outlet worked. When I arrived and looked at the power bar, everything was plugged into it... including the power bar.
I had to unplug the lamp to free up an wall outlet for the power bar.
As for smokers? Dust and smoke residue is disgusting. Add in cat hair in a home use computer for that added level of revulsion.
