Ok, I take some of this back.
Yes, the problem is that high text contast is running.
The problem is more complicated.
The main Onyx Activity ignores the settings and overrules them.
If you have your own Launcher (home Activity) and do not use the Onyx main page, then the stock settings will be followed.
As soon as you go to the Onyx main page it slams it into high contrast mode.
This affects more than just text, it will modify some lines too.
To clear the mode you have to reboot (until we find a better way).
For me, I'll just never go to the Onyx main page.
I will try to find out in the kcb.apk where it's doing all this nonsense.
