Something is interfering with the Library files or app. (Security software?)
Adding Simplified :
you select a book to add (1 file)
Calibre looks at Metadata.db to see id there is an entry (uses a big file)
Calibre adds a Author folder (if not exist), A title folder. (2 folders)
Calibre copies the book to the Title folder (1 file), It creates a Cover.jpg file (if available image) (a file)
It Schedules a metadata backup file to be added (might happen immediately for single book adds) (1 file)
All this should happen in under a minute on a typical Hard Drive.
Flash drives are SLOW
Network drives are seriously not recommended (no crying if you lose stuff later)
