I would recommend pretty much anything by Tom Robbins. Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, Jitterbug Perfume (<---possible spoilers at link) and Skinny Legs & All have been my favourites. I think the latter two in particular may cover the "magical realism" angle nicely.
