Another option is to have a copy of your library on a memory card and take that with you. Most laptops these days have a memory card slot. My laptop has a full size SD card slot but I have adapters for the microSD cards. My Surface Pro 2 only has a microSD card slot.

Local network won't help me if I'm not at home. Memory cards are unreliable. I tried with a flash drive once and it was a terrible experience. Constant errors and it was extremely slow. With Calibre, I mean, not otherwise.

The copy will be created in the same directory as the original. So the library check always finds it.
