Of course you can keep your active library on a portable disk, but then you have to lug that around with you in addition to your laptop or tablet. As I have no car and mostly use public transport, that's not an option for me either. And the disk you constantly move around is more likely to fail.

There are options. What I do is have my library on one compute and network to it from the others. I never have Calibre running more then one at a time. IT works perfectly.
Another option is to have a copy of your library on a memory card and take that with you. Most laptops these days have a memory card slot. My laptop has a full size SD card slot but I have adapters for the microSD cards. My Surface Pro 2 only has a microSD card slot.
