I have started reading this fascinating book, slowly since my German is not that good, and I think I'll read it paired with the Diary of an Ennuyée by Mrs Jameson (Anna), a friend of Elizabeth Barret Browning and an interesting woman in her own right, available on Gutenberg. It was published in 1833, but described traveling in Italy for a foreign woman in 1826, ten years before Fanny Lewald.
