I remember reading that eastern Long Island belonged to Massachusetts until some time before the American Revolution. The Dutch and English colonists made an agreement to divide Long Island roughly near the present Nassau-Suffolk County border that wasn't recognized by their home countries, because they didn't recognize the other country's territorial claims at all.
