When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain by Nghi Vo is free on Tor.com's ebook club (until May 28th)

This is the sequel to The Empress of Salt and Fortune, which I read and liked.
I believe this is a standalone, so you don't have to read that one first. It features the same main character, who is a chronicler of past events.
