Makes sense to me.

First, a member isn't 'captive.' They need to see they are getting value for their money or they'll cancel/not renew/tell their soc-med followers it's a bad deal, and exclusive sales are part of that value.

Second, new members are (theoretically) enticed in other ways, like trial memberships, and being told by other members on soc-med that it's a good deal.
